Sharrington Village Hall, The Street, Sharrington, Melton Constable, Norfolk NR24 2AB
Sharrington Village Hall was originally built in 1953 but re-opened in 1988 after substantial improvements. It is of brick built construction and stands in its own site in The Street. In 2017, with the help of grants from The Big Society and Brinton Parish Council, the heating and lighting were significantly improved, new equipment was bought for the kitchen and the hall was redecorated. In 2018, with the help of a grant from the National Lottery, lighter and more comfortable tables and chairs were acquired. During the early part of 2021 when the hall was closed as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, further improvements were made including the installation of a new kitchen and new curtains and blinds.
There is parking for up to 30 cars and the Hall can accommodate up to 90 people. It has a wooden dance floor, a stage, a kitchen area and WiFi.
Historically, the Hall has been used for a variety of community based activities including theatrical productions, choral singing, carpet bowls, bingo, dancing lessons, whist drives, parties and receptions.
More recently, whilst it has still been used for parties and receptions it has also hosted regular meetings of the Sharrington and District Gardening Group, the Noble Rotters Wine Club and the Parish Council as well as exercise classes, dance classes, craft workshops and for singing groups.
In 2021 Wi-Fi was enabled in the hall helping with credit card payments and opening opportunities for web-based training events.
In 2017 it hosted one of the first screenings of local film maker, Tony Britten’s ‘Chick Lit’. This film starred John Hurt, Eileen Atkins, Caroline Catz, Cristian McKay and many other well-known names.
2015 saw the introduction of Live Music Nights. For more information about these events please look at ‘Live Music’ on this website’s Home Page.
In recent years the hall has become well-known as a music venue hosting internationally renowned musicians including Gordon Giltrap, Magna Carta, Ken Nicol of Steeleye Span, The Strawbs (sadly postponed due to Covid), Edwina Hayes, Carrie Martin and Terence Blacker. All information about forthcoming events can be found under Live Music from the dropdown menu at the top of the page.
Since 2014, at the end of November, the Hall has hosted the Sharrington Christmas Fayre (see Photographs’ page) which includes stalls featuring local produce and seasonal gifts and a number of outside exhibitors. There is a pop-up café and a raffle featuring many festive prizes.
The Hall is available for hire both to residents and to those from outside the village. It is suitable for most activities and, by way of example, it was used by Tony Britten of Capriol Films when filming ‘Through Lotte’s Lens’. There are also tables, chairs, crockery and cutlery for hire. (For details of charges please click this link: ‘Hire Charges and Equipment’).
As part of its fund raising activities, the Village Hall Committee runs a 50/50 club. Members pay £12 each year and there is a monthly prize draw. If you would like to support the Hall and are not a member of the club, please click here to contact a member of the Committee.
