CARRIE MARTIN
0n Saturday 3rd June we had a very special treat. The brilliant singer/songwriter, Carrie Martin, performed a gig at the village hall bringing with her a very special guest in the form of Gordon Giltrap. Gordon started the evening performing a 30 minute slot before Carrie began entertaining us with melodic songs from the highly-acclaimed albums she has released including her new album ‘Evergreen‘. She travelled here fresh from a gig where, along with Gordon, she performed with Rick and Oliver Wakeman.
Gordon returned later in the evening and they performed a few numbers together. We look forward to welcoming them both back to the hall next year..
CORONATION LUNCH
On Sunday 7th May 2023 around 40 villagers attended a Coronation lunch at the Village Hall. It was a very happy event with lots of fun and laughter. We stood for the National Anthem which was played on trombone by Rowan Bell, aged 9. Then we raised a toast to the new King Charles the Third whilst sipping a very palatable Prosecco kindly provided by two members of the Village Hall Committee.
Everyone bought their own food but very delicious desserts were provided by several talented chefs in the village. It was truly wonderful to see the hall being used for what it was built for.
MIKE DILGER
Yes, he’s back! Mike Dilger, a well-known face from BBC’s ‘The One Show ‘ returned to Sharrington Village Hall to give a very entertaining talk about a year spent looking at British plant life. His aim was to see 1000 species over the course of a year and the tales of how he achieved this landmark were highly entertaining.
He is an excellent raconteur and soon had the whole hall in fits of laughter. Of course, there was a serious side to his speech. The flora and flora of this country is diminishing rapidly for a variety of reasons and he left us all with plenty to think about,
The book detailing his year’s quest is entitled ‘A Thousand Shades Of Green’. We hope to welcome him back soon.
CHRIS SIMPSON
A few years ago Sharrington Village Hall was delighted to host a concert by the world-renowned band Magna Carta. Although there have been many changes of band members over the years, including Davey Johnstone, who is currently Elton John’s lead guitarist, Chris Simpson, who founded the band has been ever present. It was wonderful to see him revisiting Sharrington and he was very impressed with all the modifications to the hall since his last visit.
Freshly returned from a sell-out tour of Holland, Chris has just released a box set of some of Magna Carta’s best known songs which includes many rare or unreleased tracks. It also includes a DVD of their last British concert at Ripley, Yorkshire. The Box Set is called ‘When All Is Said And Done’.
CHRISTMAS FAYRES
Each November the hall hosts its annual Christmas Fayre. Emphasis is always very much upon quality and not quantity. They always prove to be very successful, well-attended events which help to raise much needed funds for the hall.
CHICK LIT
On Friday 9th September ’17 a sold out hall enjoyed a fabulous, locally produced film with a host of stars called ‘Chick-lit’. Tony Britten, who wrote and directed the film, came to tell us fascinating stories of its creation.
‘Chick-lit’ is currently available on DVD If you missed seeing it locally do check out where it’s being shown as you’ll be sure to have just as much fun as we did!
PETER LINDSLEY
No, we didn’t get these mopheads!
However, on 26th February 2017 we were treated to a wonderful talk from Peter Lindsley who worked with The Beatles and many other well-known bands during the early sixties. Below he is pictured with his friend George Martin who, very sadly passed away in 2016. He’ll be sorely missed!
MIKE DILGER
The hall is enormously indebted to BBC’s ‘The One Show’ wildlife presenter, Mike Dilger. Whilst he was here visiting friends in 2015 he learnt of our quest to raise funds to maintain our Village Hall. At the time the hall was in a rather sorry state and desperately needed funds. It wasn’t being used very often for any regular events and was in need of a well-overdue face lift. Mike turned up one evening and gave a packed audience a highly amusing illustrated talk.
Funds generated from that talked kick started our fund raising efforts. He’ll find a very different hall when he returns and we hope he’ll be a regular visitor here.
